Ken Safer, 70, passed away on May 22, in Fremont, CA. He grew up in San Lorenzo, and graduated from Arroyo High School, class of 1964. He joined the Navy and operated heavy equipment with the SeaBees, serving in Chu-Lai, Vietnam, in 1966. Upon his return, he worked for the Kaiser quarry, in Niles Canyon. A resident of Fremont's "Twenty-Nine Palms" neighborhood, he was likely recognized "hot-rodding" his 1956 Ford Crown Victoria through the 1970's.
His friends knew him for his passions and competitiveness. He enjoyed fishing, and could be found with his family on the ocean, a lake, or by a stream; he was proudest of his 56.5 lb. king salmon. When he wasn't fishing, he was focused on his other great passion, which was building and flying remotely controlled replica WWII aircraft, and competing at local & national events, where he won multiple awards.
He is survived by his wife, Millie, son Joe (Shannon), daughter Wendy (Brandon), two grandchildren, his mother, Gladys, brothers, Don and Jim. A small service will be held at his favorite fishing port, September 16.
