Many memories with my Dad, some were a little crazy, one time he took Sherry and me ice skating and he picked up a hitchhiker on the way. I was a little nervous, we were young 6 or 7 years old. I would visit him during the summer months with June and Sherry from about 5years to about high school. I lived with them in 6th grade for about a year. If I would have known what an incredible father he was, I should've stayed, unfortunately June trying to overcompensate for my lack of discipline at my moms made me want to move back. Sherry was blessed to have him as a very present Father figure in her life. We are still sisters after all these years. When we were little, he would play monster with us to get us up to bed. That was a favorite of mine. It's so nice to learn about all of the stories about my dad, I know he was a great man with a big heart, I will miss him, I know where he is, and I know I will see him again. I am sure he is enjoying seeing all of his family and friends that had gone to heaven before him. Love you, Rachel

Im not sure where to start with my memories. I know my dad was a good, kind and generous person to most people. He also suffered from a bipolar disorder which started around the time I was 2 years old when my baby brother died of crib death. His disease caused him to constantly rebuild his life after losing so much each time. Most recently, I rescued him from his "high" when he was in Missouri about three years ago. His wife refused to help or be a part of this and since my sister Rachel had a full family of her own to take care of, I was elected. My sister Rachel and her hubby Jerry were vital with all ground operations before and after we returned to San Diego so this was a real team effort! I made the first trip in October (10 days) he was in a mild high then and refused to come home with me. The second time was in March and by this time he was arrested and hospitalized. I rescued him on his 80th birthday and brought him back to a motel where we stayed for 2 weeks while we settled his affairs there. There were no direct flights from Springfield MO to San Diego so I drove him to Dallas and drove his truck back to San Diego myself. I wrote a journal of everyday with him which was quite a ride. My dad practically disowned me after I came out of the closet (which means Im GAY) but eventually he "accepted it...I guess. Disowned doesn't even seem like the right word as he never really took up ownership. Every time I started a new business he asked me why I didn't get a real job. Do I need to tell you what he thought when this died in the wool Lutheran/Republican heard that I had an Indian Guru in my life, became a vegetarian and started meditating? He loved smoking and generally did not take good care of himself and he often joked about it. Smoking is good for you! It reduces stress! The ashes are good for the carpet! He was the most ill mannered obnoxious, disgusting smoker and opinionated man I've ever known. He was mainly absent from my life but my grandmother and I and then later just me came to his rescue every time. He lived exactly the way he wanted and died because he didn't take care of himself. He knew the choices he was making and accepted them. Dad, Im glad you have been released from your body and now that you know yourself in your soul body I welcome you to become the father to me that you couldn't or wouldn't be on earth and offer your direction with clarity and love from beyond. Love, Glenn

From Jim Abbatiello, married to Duane's niece, Brenda (Bartels) Abbatiello -The best tooth extraction I ever had was the only one I ever had, in Duane's office. He said in his classic gravely Duane voice, "You're going to feel some pressure," and out it came. He put some gauze into the socket and said, "Don't eat for an hour." I never felt a bit of pain from that procedure.

From Janice, a cousin. I didn't get captions added to the pictures I found in my mother, Henrietta's stash of old pictures. The first is Duane and Donna as young children. The one with the puppies is Duane, Aunt Bettie, and Uncle Ronnie. The 2 sailors are Duane in his Navy outfit with his Uncle Oliver who was on a merchant ship and lost at sea in 1942. The one with the old car is Grandpa and Grandma Rohlfsen with Aunt Bettie, Uncle Ronnie (who was a Marine), and Duane. The last one is Grandpa and Grandma Rohlfsen, Aunt Vi, Uncle Clint, Aunt Bettie, and Duane. I had a good time looking through old pictures. Donna and Duane were our oldest cousins and didn't live in Minnesota, so we didn't see them often, but, as a youngster, we did visit them in Galesburg, IL, and CA. A memory when we took a road trip to see them in CA in 1956: Duane took us for rides in his VW bug...a first for me and my brothers. We have good memories of our infrequent visits with him through the years. The last time we saw him was in Phoenix in 2010.

From Jerry Rohlfsen , a cousin. I met Duane only a few times early on in my life. He was 8 years older than me, and when you're 5 or 6 and Duane is 13 or 14, you really didn't have a lot in common. I remember he and sister Donna living in Galesburg, Il. as Mom and Dad were in the Watkins business. Over the years I hear alot about his athletic prowess football, discus thrower etc. As a coincidence, my daughter Joanna also is a dentist. He had a catchy laugh, not unlike his father Clint. Coincidently Our son Michael's middle name is also Clint. Rest in peace Duane.

I rember Duane as a joker in his youth. He was older than me and my brother and when we visited them in Galesburg Il.he would tease us. Shortly after we moved to Minnesota Uncle Clint moved his family to California. I saw him a few times at family reunions on the 4th of July at Mound Mn. I remember him having a smile on his face. He was a good athlete.

I remember your zest for life, your love for all things outdoors, fishing, hunting, chasing me around with crabs scaring me and getting the biggest kick out of it. I remember a camping trip where we sat on giant rocks looking out across the lake you just fished at all day. Then waking back to camp and hearing some kids had killed a rattlesnake, and of course you saying we would take it and cook it for dinner. Yeah it didn't exactly taste like chicken like you said it would :). I remember working with you during the summer, you were a very demanding boss, but so giving and kind to your patients. Always serving those who could not afford it but were in need. Rest in peace, we will see you again in god's time.

One of the sweet memories of my Dad was at my wedding and it was my first dance with my husband and my dad cut in on us and swung me around the dance floor with my heavy dress all over the place. I just laughed and enjoyed the moment.
