From: Suzi Ange Tuesday, December 30, 2014
Daddy always kept a small garden. I asked him one day when I was 5 or so, "Daddy, why do you have a garden when you can buy it at the grocery store?" He replied, "It's much less expensive when we grow our own and much better for you." "Oh, okay." My five year old mind had to ponder that. Now, as the family knows, steak baked potato and salad on Sundays. One Sunday daddy took me to the store to buy either t-bones or porterhouse for that day. I remember him questioning why they were so expensive this week. Then says, " It matters none, my baby girl is here and we will buy them anyway! What do you think of that!?" When we got home, I looked up at him with huge admiring eyes while he seasoned the steaks and pushed them aside while they reached room temperature. We watched football for a little while. Well, actually I watched him watch football and cheered when he cheered and booed when he booed. Then I had a mission. After the first game he says, "Pumpkin, do you know what happened to our steaks?" No we did not have a dog at that time. so........ I said "sure daddy! I planted them in our garden." He gets down on one knee and wraps his arms around me, no anger in his beautiful green eyes or his voice and asks, "Why did you plant our steaks in the garden?" "Because daddy, it will be less expensive and much better for us to grow our own." Well, here is to his character. I cant remember how much they were but I do know that he wrestled with himself for a few minutes that day whether to buy those two steaks or not. Daddy said, "Thank you pumpkin for always thinking of our family, you wrap the potatoes and I will be right back." I thought he was going to get more steaks at the store and even at that young age I knew he couldn't afford.I felt bad. Until Daddy walks in with two beautiful porter house steaks covered in dirt. I ask, "are you mad at me daddy?" He says, "Mad at you!? You are smarter than me. These will be the best seasoned steaks ever!" We then proceeded, even after the numerous washings, to have the best, the crunchiest, steak, baked potatoes and salad dinner EVER! I love you Daddy. I still kiss your picture good morning and goodnight. And every time I have a porterhouse ("wipe it's nose, wipe it's ass, run it through a warm room and bring it to me!") I enjoy every bite, wish you were there to eat the marrow (still yucky!) And am grateful that it wasn't just pulled from the garden. Forever, Suzi
