Born May 25, 1930, Ralph Junius Harris Sr - fondly called "Opi," passed Sunday August 10th 2014 at UMASS Memorial Hospital Worcester Massachusetts. At his side was: his wife of 58 years, Bettijean; his daughter Robin; son Ricky; grand-niece Jazzy with her partner "Dee"; his pastor Rev. Steven Wilco of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Amherst MA;and the love, prayers and best wishes of a multitude of others who couldn't be present. Even to your last breath, you kept a smile. You will be missed Opi, but not forgotten.

From: Denise Amato This is the card I gave to Opi (Ralph) on his birthday this year. And in response, he said "this goes in the family album"...once again, reflecting my birthday message. Dear Opi, This is a more accurate way to describe what our relationship ~ what you have meant to me! I am grateful for such an honest, caring, family, friend. And I thank God for placing you in my heart! Happy Birthday! Love, Denise Why God Created Families When Creation was finished, each star in its place; God created earth, in His thoughtful embrace. And knowing that there would be problems to face, His wonderful plan came to be put in place. For He wanted His children to learn to be strong, and not to become frightened if things should go wrong. So He placed in each Heart a desire to belong somewhere they felt needed. Then He added acceptance and patience and Trust. Love that was unselfish, caring and just. Where questions were welcome and laughing a must...And He called His great gift...a Family!

I had just turned 7 years old when I attended Bettijean & Ralph's wedding. Bettijean and I are relatives. Her Mother and my Grandmother are Sisters. And, when I close my eyes I can still remember the wedding. It was the first wedding I ever attended. And, it was Spectacular & Grand. Looking back, I now realize how inspirational this experience was for me. Over the years, as families sometimes do; I lost contact with this wonderful couple. Yet, remember I had been inspired. I lived my life loving music! All types of music! But, in particular classical vocal music. I sang at church, elementary school, high school and attended "Indiana State University" on a full vocal music scholarship. All this time never remembering who, when and where I had been inspired to use my Bass-Baritone voice. I just loved singing. And, just today I read that like Ralph I too had become a member of "Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia" Music Fraternity" in college. So I am proud to learn of my connection to this wonderful man and his wife Bettijean. I sincerely regret not sharing the richness of his experience in my life. I would have loved to swap a few vocals with this talented relative. Bettijean, please know that your life and Ralph's life made a difference in my life! Thank You!

I will always remember this talented, intelligent, witty man, whom I am proud to call a friend. He sang, "Happy Birthday," to me at my 40th birthday party in 2010, both in English and German. We also shared his 80th birthday celebration, and my grandmother's 85th and 88th. Sadly, my grandmother Anna has dementia and has been living in skilled nursing for the last 2 years. Both Bettijean and Ralph were great friends to us both. I cherish our trips to Belchertown beach, and especially to Tanglewood in the Berkshires. He will be greatly missed.
