Edit: Supposed to be PAINFUL sporting events, not painless. I blame my editor Susie for this oversight.

Walter McFatridge was a lot of things to a lot of people. To me he was a father, a dad, and a friend.
A father who taught me the ways of life.
What it means to be a true father.
How to love and to care for others.
To teach me the difference between right and wrong, good and bad.
To lead by example, how to love your family.
How to be committed to the good and welfare of love ones.
How to make sacrifices and be selfless while doing these things.

But he was so much more.
He was also a dad.
Someone who played with you as a child, who would suffer through excruciating games such as electric football which he would later confessed he hated. Lol
Someone who always found the time to play, no matter how tired or busy.
Someone who took walks with you down old abandoned railroad tracks and collected vomit-filled aluminum cans in roadside ditches.
Someone who spent hours building blocks or setting up an army fortress just to tear it all down in minutes
Someone to teach you how to drive for the first time.
Someone that encouraged you in all facets of life
Someone you could always count on to be there for no matter how bad things appeared or got.

And lastly he was my friend.
Someone to play cards with you and the family.
Someone to share all the laughter that life can offer.
Someone to share the countless and sometimes painless sporting events, mainly Notre Dame football. Lol
Those times were most precious to me, those times I hope I can recall as I leave this world, and somehow hoped maybe just maybe a small part of him remembered as he passed away. Those are my wishes.
Someone who would lend you money, knowing sometimes he would never get it back. Again lol
Someone you could talk to not as a father or even a dad, but as a true friend you could confide in about anything.
Someone who would call you and leave a message as short as “Big Mac”, referring to another homerun hit by Mark McGwire his favorite player at that time chasing homerun records
Someone who played softball and baseball countless times with my friends and family as just “one of the guys”
Someone you just knew in your heart was more than just a dad and a father.

Anyone can be a father, it’s not that hard to do. But nobody I will ever know can be the kind of father we knew he was. It takes a special man to be so much more than just a father, and he was that man. May you forever enjoy the things that made you happy here on earth, maybe just maybe someday we will all join you in that happiness. I can only hope and pray there is such a place where you can one day be my father, dad, and friend again. I would be honored to share that with you for all of eternity.
Rest in eternal peace,
My father,
My dad,
My friend

Have you lost a loved one?
