From U.S. Army Soldier to Transportation Extraordinaire:
When I was asked to prepare a military bio for my friend, Sergeant First Class Ann Dawson-August, I thought to myself, “Wow, where do I begin?
Ann and I have roots dating back as far as our teenage days in high school. That story, however, will be told at another time.
Ann joined the United States Army Reserve while working as a civilian. She was a part of our distinguished Women’s Army Corps (WAC) which is honorably known as the first women’s Army branch of the United States. WACs,trained independently of their male counterparts.
The Army Civilian Acquired Skills Program (ACASP), of which Ann was a part, was an accelerated program for select groups of women, who’d acquired either a college degree and/or had civilian professional administrative business skills.
Ann completed basic training in 1975 at Fort McClellan in Anniston, Alabama. She was assigned as a Legal Specialist, Non-Commissioned Officer for her first duty assignment. One of her units was the 157th Judge Advocate General’s Office, Legal Support Organization.
In this capacity, Ann was responsible for supporting the unit's mission of providing subordinate units in preparing troops for mobilization and deployment, legal assistance services, international operational law services, and military justice/judicial/defense services.
Ann was a part of the unit's “Special” mobilization Ready, Soldier Readiness Program (SRP). In this capacity, as legal NCO, Ann assisted in preparing Wills and Powers Of Attorney, while in support of Operation Joint Guard: Desert Storm/Desert Shield/and Bosnia, respectively.
Sergeant First Class August was also the finance NCO and the Chief Editor-in-Charge for the unit’s monthly legal news brief.
She always volunteered for “other duties as assigned.” Ann was the unit’s photographer for our holiday parties and summer family picnic events. We would always find her coming from out of nowhere to take our family and other photographs. She made being in the military, which could be very stressful, more tolerable. She was indeed a mentor to the younger, inexperienced soldiers.
One of our dear friends and “battle buddies”, Maryann Hamilton, (Master Sergeant, Retired), recently reflected during an afternoon lunch about a pre-mobilization experience. We’d seen more than 300 soldiers and were exhausted. Our Captain was sharing some of his experiences of being deployed in the Middle East. He had been invited by Middle East dignitaries to attend a “Beheading”, and as a military officer, it would have been an insult to the host not to attend.
We all felt sad after the captain shared his story, however,” good ol’ Ann”, in her usual quiet and attentive demeanor, jumped up from the table, and began singing “I Ain’t Got Nobody!” Needless to say, we all roared out belly-laughing because Ann had unexpectedly brought levity, although somewhat dark humor, to the seriousness of the moment.
There are so many memories we all could share.
Ann received many awards and letters of commendation which include an Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition, Certificate of Achievement, and a host of Certificates of Appreciation.
