I first knew her as Raquel’s mom when we were at St. John’s Primary. When we went to Holy Childhood she became Ms. Carmen, but that soon changed. During our second parent-teacher meeting no one showed up for me. Ms. Carmen said she would be there with me until my parents showed. She was true to her word. My parents each thought the other would be there and so Ms. Carmen became second Mommy. She even paid my taxi fare all the way home. After that I was frequent visitor to her home. She was a fearless woman and mother and had no issues taking a taxi and a bus to be there for not only her child but others as well.
She kept a clean but loving house. I talked to her about boys before I could even dream of going to my mom. She always listened with a smile. Such a beautiful soul no matter what she faced. She loved to laugh and tell corny jokes, except they weren’t corny to me just to Raquel. LOL!!!
She left an imprint on my life since before I was a teenager. I am grateful I had the privilege of knowing her. Thinking of her doesn’t make me sad. Her memories make me smile because even though she’s physically gone, her smile is still infectious. Raquel, you have no idea how blessed you are. God loves you so very much that He allowed one of His best angels to birth you. That thought alone should fill you with pride, but what should bring you comfort and joy is the fact that your Mommy, Zaiden’s grandmother, Dale’s other mother and my original second mom, will be waiting expectantly for you on that Great Getting Up Morning!!! Oh, what unspeakable joy that will be! Hebrews 13:5 says, “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” Be encouraged in that truth. Your memories of your mom will always be with you. You were her fiercest love and her greatest joy. What should be most comforting, is you look just like her. It’s crazy. You also have her heart and mannerisms. She’s still right there with you and in you and Zaiden will know. I love you!
