I first met and worked with Lui 20 years ago in the early days of the development project which built NEPTune. Our paths crossed many times in numerous conference rooms and working session calls. However, it was during one trip to Dayton when I needed to discuss a design detail and I sought him out. I wandered around the various cubicles and asked a person or two for directions along the way, until I located him. His cubicle was against the outside wall, the large windows providing much natural light. He was laid back in his chair, his long legs stretched out underneath his desk. And then I noticed -- he was barefoot. In that moment his "cool" factor shot way up in my perspective.
He always had a smile and warm greeting for me whenever we saw each other in person. His presence on conference calls raised the level of discussion. Our work paths eventually diverged, and it became a rare occurrence when we would be on the same call. But when it did happen, hearing his voice on the line always brought back pleasant memories of professional productive connections.
I always found him to be an extremely knowledgeable and intelligent person, and a genuine and friendly human being. I will miss him.

I’ve known Lui for 18 years. Most of that time we’ve been on the same team, under the same manager, facing the same types of issues. In all of that time, I couldn’t think of a single negative comment about him. It seemed that everybody I came in contact with both liked and respected Lui. He was always willing to help you out with anything at all and was my go-to guy for historical information on systems and people. Seemed like he’d always been there and seemed like he knew more than a little about everything
I never heard him say a negative thing about anyone, even when I could have pulled out a few choice comments. It’s not that he didn’t get frustrated with things, it’s just that he didn’t impose that frustration on anyone else. I remember Lui most at team outings where he was always joking around with everyone. All of his “ribbing” was always good-natured and never framed to put someone down or make them feel bad. He was not above making himself the target of a few jokes as well. A real equal opportunity jocker.
For the past five years or so we were cube neighbors where we could always talk over the wall about anything. I’m going to miss those over the wall talks, and I’m going to miss Lui. I don’t know about others, but I was blessed by his friendship.
