I was devastated to learn of Ron's death. We went to high school together and were debate partners. Ron had a gift for mock pomposity that was hilarious and put pomp in its proper place. He was always fascinated with logic and the structure of argument. He had a beautiful deep resonant voice and a slight detachment from whatever he was saying that conveyed that he was paying critical attention to himself while he argued with someone else. Philosophy and aikodo made perfect sense. I lost touch with him, except for brief contact and exchange of books. This was my loss. He was a kind, decent gifted person.

I remember when Aikido Today Magazine (ATM) was first published. As far as I'm concerned, it fundamentally changed the dynamic of the American aikido community. Suddenly there was a way to hear about seminars at other dojos...at other dojos that were not part of YOUR organization. Interviews with a variety of different teachers were published as well as a wide range of essays. It's been almost 10 years since ATM's last issue, and I struggle to find words to describe the impact that it had. For that work alone, Ron Rubin has a permanent place in the history of aikido in America and my gratitude. My condolences to his family, friends, and students.
