WOLMER’S HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS- TRIBUTE FOR MADAME SANGSTER
Bonjour Mesdames et Messieurs Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen
Bringing this tribute from Wolmer’s Girls’ school are :
Mrs. Hyacinth Williams-Retired Vice-Principal, Madame Elise N’dalla- retired Head Of Modern Languages Department and myself, Dr. Aldyth Buckland -Wolmer’s Girls past student and friend of Dr. Kathleen Sangster
Mrs. Sangster, my French teacher, empowered us in Age Quod Agis- whatever, you do, do it to the best of your abilities. She displayed Age Quod Agis as a teacher and expected Age Quod Agis from us. She was the composed Captain of her ship. Giving you that eye if you were out of line. She showed respect and got respect. She knew how to keep our attention using fun and drama: for example, teaching us to count from eleven to twenty she put us to act it out- demonstrating first in a booming voice:
“ onze, douze, treize!!!!
trumpet blows: “da da da da da da da da!”
“Quatorze, Quinze, Seize” (brief pause)
“Dix-sept, Dix-huit, Dix-neuf , Vingt!”
That lesson has remained with me throughout the years! What we learn with pleasure, we never forget! That’s a master teacher for you! It was not just a lesson in numbers, it was a lesson in emotional connection, a lesson to action!
She surely brought joy and pleasure to the present moment in teaching! We were honored to have been taught by such a wonderful empowering master teacher, nurturer, and nation builder.
Au revoir, Madame Sangster.
To her family, we thank you for sharing her with us. May the peace of God that passes all understanding bring joy to your hearts. Age Quod Agis!
Thank you.
